Chlorine and other contaminants can cause eye irritation and/or infection.
Things to Consider when playing in water:
- Chlorine can make your eyes a little red, teary, and sensitive to light for a couple of hours after pool or waterpark time.
- Chlorine can kill most harmful things in the water, but it doesn’t kill some viruses and bacteria which can survive and cause infection.
- Avoid the water if you have a cut or irritation in your eyes.
- Always take you contact lenses out before entering the water.
- When playing with a hose, be careful not to spray directly in a person’s eye, this can cause damage to the eyes.
Prevention and Advice:
- Wearing goggles can decrease this exposure.
- To ease pain and redness, flush eyes with cool and clean water or use a saline solution.
- Typical signs of infection can include redness, pain, discharge, vision problems, sensitivity to light and swelling.
